2008: Veteran Series competitor teamed with rookie Porsche factory driver Patrick Pilet for full season. ◊ Added Richard Lietz at Sebring for what turned into troubling event. After early incident with Audi prototype, crew repaired rear axle and suspension for eighth-place finish. ◊ Second at St. Petersburg, and third at Long Beach and Utah. ◊ Punted off track by fellow GT2 Porsche at Lime Rock for seventh place. ◊ Runner-up in class at Mid-Ohio ahead of championship-leading sister car. ◊ Started and ended fourth at Road America and running in podium contention at Mosport before having to stop to replace starter late. ◊ Returned to podium at Detroit despite late-race contact from No. 7 Penske Porsche RS Spyder for a second place finish. ◊ At Road Atlanta, long weekend started and ended in misfortune. Damaged destroyed both cars. ◊ Started and finished fourth in team’s home race at Mazda.
2007: Posted best season to date with three wins and seven podiums in 12 starts by partnering with Jörg Bergmeister in Flying Lizard Porsche. Duo finished second in championship. ◊ Watched with teammate Marc Lieb from pit lane as Bergmeister drove to the closest and most heated finish in race history, ultimately finishing second in GT2 behind Jamie Melo in the Risi Ferrari by 0.202 seconds. ◊ Runner-up again at St. Petersburg before car suffered setback with broken radiator following bump with Audi prototype for ninth-place class finish. ◊ Runner-up again at Houston to Ferrari after leading with 30 minutes to go. ◊ Another runner-up at Utah preceded season’s first victory; Porsche suffered punctured tire on opening lap but team capitalized on crash that took out three leading Ferraris. ◊ Scored another victory at Mid-Ohio, first time team recorded wins in back-to-back races. ◊ Lost out in the end at Road America in fifth place, and posted like result at Mosport after going down two laps early. ◊ Qualifying spin led to eighth-place start. Car retired after catching fire in opening stint with van Overbeek at wheel. ◊ Earned measure of Sebring revenge with victory at Petit Le Mans while closing class championship battle. ◊ Finished fourth at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, a lap down to winning Ferrari.
2006: Made all 10 starts and earned third career victory in season that saw him finish second in driver championship. ◊ Finished second in class at Sebring with Lieb/Jon Fogarty, just five seconds behind winning Panoz Esperante. ◊ Joined by Wolf Henzler for balance of season, starting with another runner-up finish. ◊ Won for second time in career at Mid-Ohio to finish 11th overall with Henzler. ◊ Runner-up again at Lime Rock and followed that with third-place GT2 finish at Utah to keep season podium streak going. ◊ That run was snapped with fourth place at Portland and fifth at Road America although championship lead for van Overbeek remained. ◊ Returned to podium at Mosport with third-place finish. ◊ Fell back to fifth at Petit Le Mans after steering and shifting issues. ◊ Lost championship in Laguna Seca with sixth-place finish that resulted from broken radiator.

1999: Contested all eight races in inaugural season of Series, driving BMW M3 in GT class for BMW Team PTG. ◊ Started season on sour note with mechanical retirement in Sebring 12 Hours, but bounced back to record GT class win in April event at Road Atlanta with co-driver Brian Cunningham. ◊ Finished every Series race after the Road Atlanta win, recording third at Mosport, Sears Point and Portland. ◊ Fourth in Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta and at Las Vegas.
At Le Mans: Four starts with one podium, all with Flying Lizards. ◊ Debuted in 2005 with third-place run in Porsche shared with Seth Neiman/Lonnie Pechnik. ◊ Just missed podium return in 2006 with fourth-place result with Neiman/Patrick Long. ◊ Retired just shy of 10-hour mark (transmission) in race with Bergmeister/Neiman. ... Same trio finished sixth in GT2 in 2008 despite losing nearly three hours with crash-related damage in second hour.
Was awarded Porsche Cup at end of 2007 as world’s top independent Porsche pilot. ◊ Wolf Henzler won in 2006 as part of Flying Lizard team. ◊ Van Overbeek began racing career at age 23 and purely as a hobby. ◊ First race of any kind was in 1993, when he set track record for class at Thunderhill Raceway. ◊ Spent early portion of career specializing in SPEED World Challenge races, where he won three times and had 16 podium finishes in 38 total starts from 1996 onward. ◊ Started out in BMW M3 and scored first win/pole/ fast lap at Topeka’s Heartland Park. ◊ Flying Lizard team of today, one of Series’ most consistently competitive teams, conceptualized in 2004 when van Overbeek/Neiman/Pechnik alternated for six-hour victory at Watkins Glen event. ◊ Cites Ron Fellows as the American Le Mans Series driver he admires most. ◊ Would like to see Series stage more street races, a viewpoint that has been answered with additions of St. Petersburg, Long Beach, Houston and Detroit venues since 2006. ◊ Would like to meet aviation legend Chuck Yeager.
